If you are considering giving your kids ukulele lessons, here are three quick things we suggest to keep in mind.
We are about to share two pros and one con to ukulele lessons for kids:
1. The Ukulele is Easy to Transport
It’s small and light. Perfect for little kids to learn how to handle and be responsible with a musical instrument. You definitely want to get a carrying case to go with your instrument because it the child is carrying it around, it’s sure to get bumped and nicked!
2. The Ukulele is a Simple Instrument
The ukulele has one less string than a guitar does. This could make it easier to grasp conceptually for a child when it comes to learning the names of the strings and tuning them.
The strings on a ukulele are also softer than a guitar. This means that the child doesn’t have to work through building as tough of calluses on their fingertips right away like they would with a guitar.
3. The Ukulele Isn’t Necessarily as Applicable
Most of the times when we see a ukulele being played, chords are being strummed. Very rarely do you see a ukulele playing melodic solos.
This means that the ukulele may not be as interesting melodically unless the child is also taught how to sing while they strum. Or at least how to strum while other people sing.
This also means that the student may have to be open to singing as well as playing their instrument when it comes to practicing, performing, etc.
But We Still Highly Suggest Ukulele Lessons for Kids
Despite the one con to ukulele lessons for kids that we mentioned, overall, we think the ukulele is a great beginner’s instrument to start with along with piano lessons.
Although starting kids with ukulele lessons has very different strengths than piano lessons, we still think it’s a good place to start a child with their musical education experience.
