When it comes to piano lessons for kids, there are a couple of things parents should know. Sometimes we have parents who ask us the right questions up front and sometimes we have parents that don’t know to ask.

So, here are three things to know when it comes to piano lessons for kids.

1. You Will Need to Have a Piano or Keyboard

We always ask because there are those parents that sign their kids up for piano lessons but don’t provide them with an instrument to practice on at home! Student can’t make progress with an instrument if they aren’t applying their newly-learned knowledge every day!

Music is like learning a language. You have to use it every day in order to build on the application, not just the theory, of a concept. Daily practice is essential so an instrument in the house is essential.

2. The Requirements for a Keyboard for Piano Lessons

Keyboards come in all kinds of styles, lengths, and with all kinds of bells and whistles.

All you need is a keyboard that:

  1. Makes a basic piano sound. (No need for the fancy sounds)
  2. Is full-sized -88 keys. (Or at least 76 keys for a child beginner)
  3. Has weighted keys. (Keys that have a similar resistance to them like real piano keys)
  4. Has a sustain pedal

So, you don’t have to have a real piano. You can have a keyboard that mimics a piano and that can serve just as well.

3. Successful Piano Students Have a Routine

You know how, when kids were little, they had naptimes, eating times, routine activities before bed like a bath, a story, brushing teeth, etc.? Some parents even put their newborns and little infants on a routine to get them to sleep through the night.

That’s because kids thrive with structure and routine.

If you can get your child into a practice routine, they will do much better with their learning progress. Especially during those times when they don’t feel like practicing. Our piano students know that routine is stronger than feelings; it’s part of daily life.
